My name is Shanni. I'm married and the mother of two grown children. I love kids and I used to work in Day Care, but since moving six years ago, I gave that up. I do volunteer in the nursery at my church, though, so I still get my "baby fix", ;)!
I've been a "lurker" for a long time now, but I finally decided to take the plunge and join LJ. I consider myself to be rather "computertarded" so this was a big step for me. IF I can manage to work up my courage, and IF my mercurial muses are willing to cooperate, I hope to write a bit of fanfic. LoTR RPS and Troy RPS are my favorite 'verses. My OTP is Orlibean, but I also enjoy Vigorli and Banabloom.
I love to read, which is probably why I want to try my hand at writing. I think a lot of avid readers are frustrated writers at heart. I've gathered quite a collection of books over the years, including mysteries, romances (both modern and historical), mild thrillers (don't like gore very much), bios and even a few true crime stories, but Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte are my all time favorite authors. Nothing relaxes me more than curling up in front of the fire place to read Pride and Prejudice or Jane Eyre for the umpteenth time!
Another thing I find surprisingly relaxing is cooking and baking. I always feel such a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when I'm through. I really enjoy collecting cookbooks, and I love trying out new dishes and desserts. My T.V. is usually turned to the Food Network in search of different ideas, and finding a great new recipe always makes me smile.
Music also makes me happy, and I have very ecclectic tastes. Depending on my mood, I listen to everything from Mozart and Vivaldi to Sinatra and Nat King Cole to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim to John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot to Crosby Stills & Nash and The Moody Blues, to The Beatles and The Eagles, with some Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond thrown in for good measure. As I mentioned above, ecclectic taste, but the only CD that NEVER leaves the player in my car is Phantom of the Opera. There's just something about that music that I never get tired of!
My other favorite pasttimes include watching DVDs with my husband (especially old classics and musicals...Gene Kelly, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn...*happy sigh*), gardening, hiking, traveling, going to movies and the theatre and listening to our local symphony.
Well, that's me in six short paragraphs. Whoops, I guess this makes seven now, but math was never my strong point, ;)! I hope to make a lot of new friends here on LJ, and possibly get to know some of the writers that I've admired for such a long time now.
